It can be argued that spontaneity and unpredictability are the greatest characteristics of life. We all know life has unexpected turns, turns that could make us or break us, turns that are beyond our control. We all live knowing this, but the idea of something beyond our control destroying what we have worked for is too much to bear. Likewise, the idea of something creating instant sucess and/or happiness in our lives is not something that we can count on either. One cannot expect a "making turn" because it would remove incentive (to at least some degree) to progress and better oneself. Expecting a "breaking turn" would have the same effect for a different reason: instead of excessive confidence, fear of catastrophe would overwhelm us.
No matter how much control we may try to have or think we have over our life, a single event can change everything drastically for better or for worse. This is a frightening idea. But it also has its purpose. It keeps us thinking on our feet. Since we are all aware of the spontaneity inherent in life, we are ready to adapt if change comes our way; itself an adaptation for the sake of self-preservation. Apart from the evolutionary purposes, it also keeps us entertained! A more predictable world would be low-risk, yes, but boring!
So you see, spontaneity can be, in different circumstances, both the greatest positve and greatest negative characterisitc in life. Which I think would make it the greatest.
